Ugadi/Yugadhi is celebrated as New Year’s Day for the Hindus of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana states in India. This day falls in March or April month. The festive ceremonies of Ugadi are observed in harmony with the joy and beauty of nature to mark the beginning of growth, affluence and prosperity for everyone.
People start this special festive day early with ritual showers and wear new clothes, draw beautiful Kolam (Rangoli) on the space just outside theirhomes. The main entrance, doors and windows of houses are decorated with fresh green mango leaves called thoranam. The people visit temples to seek divine blessings for health, wealth, success and prosperity in the New Year.
The Pachadi is a special festive food that combines all flavors – sweet, sour, salty, bitter. The ingredients of the dish symbolize the different phases and experiences of life that everyone undergoes during the journey from cradle to grave.
